all the news that’s fit to broadcast…

to black people. republican and former congressman from jc watts from oklahoma is starting up a new news network called the Black Television News Channel (btnc). according to the new york post, btnc is “slated to launch in early 2009, [and] already has an agreement with Comcast cable to be carried in several cities with large black populations including Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Washington D.C., Atlanta and Baltimore.” the article goes on to say that the channel will be funded by two un-named news veterans and that it will cover news stories that are important to blacks. it actually says the reporting will reach beyond crime (it said that, not kidding).

i have a few questions beyond “is this really necessary?”:

i would have to say that there are people that are straight up all kinds of things, including Black.

is this channel necessary? maybe, maybe not.

but if we can have a channel that has more positive stories/ representations/information about people of color, I think that would be a great thing.

would my marketing slogan be “our reporting reaches beyond crime?” um. no.

is JC Watts the one to deliver whatever this channel is meant to be? um. debatable.
