but do i still need to build it myself?
if you’ve ever worked with a designer, then you know that challenging their creative vision is no joke. still it’s a little baffling to me that ikea’s recent change of font inspired so much attention. ikea has ditched their customized futura font for the standard everyday verdana font and the folks don’t like it. “Words can’t describe my disgust,” said ben cristensen of melbourne.
the reason for the switch is, like all things, cost. designed by microsoft mainly for the web, verdana is a free font so ikea can use the same font in all countries with many alphabets. however, for the same reason, the same reason why verdana works so well on your monitor is the reason why it doesn’t work in print.
and why are some in the creative community so opposed to the change? “Look, I know this isn’t world hunger,” he says. “But if a company like Ikea can make this mistake, you have to wonder who is going to lead when it comes to design.” said marius ursache, a romanian designer. if you’re like me, you probably won’t even notice the change but if you want to take up the fight, sign ursache’s online petition.
