‘dick’ isn’t a great name in english

dick a recent story profiled a company in the uk that, for close to $1,700 bones, will do research on baby names to make sure that a name isn’t offensive or weird in other languages.  for the fee, “the company’s linguists will carry out a ‘basic name translation audit’ of names, checking their meaning in 100 languages” (people can pay for additional searches. the article goes on to identify certain celebrities that could have (and probably should have) paid for this service.  for example the stefani/rossdales may have wanted to know that zuma means ‘lord frowns in anger’ in aztec and the holmes/cruise clan may have learned that suri means ‘pickpocket’ in japanese and ‘turned sour’ in french.

maybe if dick’s parents had called him ‘mike’ things would have turned out differently.
