google in the news

googlefive years later, google finally drops the “beta” from gmail, docs, calendar and talk applications. currently there doesn’t seem to be any obvious implications from the change to the those who use the free version of the apps so this news slipped by quietly and because really, how many people even noticed it was still in beta?

other not so quiet news out of google this week is announcement of the google chrome operating system. the media has made much hoopla over it, some suggesting this might mean the end for microsoft and others saying it really amounts to no news. it all boils down to this – the new operating system is not really a full operating system. it’s the chrome browser with drivers attached built on top of the linux operating system which essentially makes it a more internet-centric operating system than what currently exists. so while it’s unlikely that it will force microsoft out of business, what it will do is push them to move away from the current pc centric operating system to a more internet-centric operating system.

it wasn’t long along that microsoft released their competing search engine, bing, against google search. seems the two companies have a little healthy competition going on…now if only gm will learn a lesson here.
