got milk?
first the lip synching chinese girl, then the fake fireworks for dramatics, now we find out that the chinese government also temporarily covered up the poison milk scandal. in the past few months, at least 53,000 babies have become ill after drinking milk that was made by a powder sold by sanlu. the powder was found to have high levels of melamine, a pesticide known to cause kidney stones in humans. local media in china first reported on the milk poisoning story in july but because of the olympics, china had imposed a black out that deemed “all food safety issues” off limits and the story was buried.
this reaches beyond the milk to yogurt and other products made from milk. yesterday cadbury recalled 11 of it’s chocolate products made in china. today, lipton recalls some of it’s milk tea powder. oreos, m&ms and snickers made in china are also being investigated.
it’s kinda sad to see these stories coming out of china. the olympics was suppose to bring a spotlight and more openness to the country. i doubt this was what they were expecting. ironically, there wasn’t much news about the human rights issues or the smog filled air… or maybe that just china just did a better job at covering those stories up.
