healthy…and stoopid
what is it with cereal this year? kellogg’s is claiming that the popular cereal cocoa krispies boosts immunity. they claim this because they’ve raised the levels of vitamins a, c, and e (those known to boos immune systems) from 10% of the daily value to 25% of the daily value. the move shockingly hasn’t gone over well with health experts. kelly brownwell, director of yale’s rudd center for food policy and obesity says “this one belongs in the hall of fame…by their logic, you can spray vitamins on a pile of leaves, and it will boost immunity.” people are also outraged because of the timing of the cereal’s arrival on supermarket shelves–in case you hadn’t heard, there’s a swine flu epidemic. kellogg says the new packaging and label switch have nothing to do with h1n1–in fact, they released the product back in may. susanne norwitz, kellogg’s spokeswoman said that the company “developed this product in response to consumers expressing a need for more positive nutrition.”
to me it sounds like they’re trying to put lipstick on a pig. but then again, if it keeps my andy (a.k.a. anderson cooper) safe from getting the flu, i think it’s worth a look–in addition to the fda, i bet these people will take a second look.
