justice is blind…and broke
the economic downturn is now causing states to cut corners. budget-squeezed states are being forced to save money and the court systems seems to be taking the hit.
in january, the superior court system in new hampshire will eliminate jury trials in order to prevent off layoffs (the measure will save the state $73,000). in neighboring vermont, district and family courts are closed 1/2 day per week in the last quarter of the year, a measure that represents $300,000 in cost savings.
these states are not alone, at least 20 state court systems were facing budget deficits and that those in arizona, california, florida, michigan and minnesota were suffering the most so said don hall, vice president of the national center for state courts.
me thinks that when you visit any of these states, best to drive 55 and refrain from jaywalking. don’t say i didn’t warn you.
