maybe it’s time to try google docs
if you get a new computer this holiday season and it doesn’t come preloaded with microsoft office (and you really need it), you might want to make sure you buy it soon. back in may, microsoft was found violating candian i4i’s data handling of custom xml and they lost their appeal today. they’re now banned from selling the current version of office 2007 and word 2007 after jan 11th (the suit doesn’t affect current copies that have already been sold.) according to microsoft “we have been preparing for this possibility since the District Court issued its injunction in August 2009 and have put the wheels in motion to remove this little-used feature from these products.” microsoft expects to rerelease office 2007 and word 2007 and have them in stores by jan 11th but you never know.
btw, in addition to rereleasing the software, the “little-used feature” is costing microsoft $290 million dollars.
