next up: porsche’s special edition ‘jesus cabriolet’

indiamontblanc developed a $25,000 pen writing instrument to commemorate the 140th anniversary of gandhi’s birth. only 241 of the writing instruments will be sold, a nod to the 241 miles gandhi walked in protest of the salt tax levied by the british back in the day. of course, montblanc made a donation to charity ($145K was deposited into the account of his great grandson’s foundation and a portion of each pen sold (up to $1,500 bones per pen) will go to charity.

ironic is the word that comes to mind when you consider that gandhi frowned upon luxurious living and made it part of his life’s work to promote indian-made goods (montblanc is a german company) and montblanc turning (as they put it) ghandi into a ‘brand ambassador’ hasn’t gone over well. dijo kappen, managing trustee of the center for consumer education in india’s southern state of kerala said  “mahatma gahndi advocated a simple lifestyle…he was, of course, a nationalist and, in the nature of the independence struggle, the only thing he promoted was indian-made goods. it is a mockery of the great man and an insult to the nation … to use him as a poster-boy.” dijo filed suit against the company to stop distribution of the pen.

never fear, montblanc wants the pen to be accessible to all indians so they’ve come up with a low-low litgow priced version of the pen that costs around $3,600.

that’s frickin awesome, considering that 450 million indians make about $1.25 bucks a day.
