why is she a baby mama?

blackbarbieshe may have fuller lips and wavier hair than white barbie but mattel’s new black barbie is not going over well with some people.  the major criticism is that she isn’t black enough because her hair isn’t curly enough and there’s too much weave –black barbie seems to be addicted to the creamy crack (where have we heard this before?). barbie’s creator, stacy mcbride-irby a black woman herself said, “they mean so much to me because they did come from a positive place…my daughter loves the dolls. i’ve had dads thank me for creating this line of dolls that represent their little girls. these dolls are for girls all over the world.”

earlier controversy

mattel is sensitive to the launch because of previous misteps into the ethnic world.  in 1997 the company launched oreo fun barbie with nabisco.  oreo fun barbie sported a black and white oreo shaped purse and i guess they weren’t aware of the sensitivity associated with the term. maybe this time around they’ll do a marketing thing with disney for the launch of their animated movie featuring the first black princess.
