the next sport to sweep the national just be a game called budgetball that’s being played on college campuses. created by the national academy of public administration and a new york based company called area/code, the game is supposed to increase awareness of the federal debt. the game is played with a volleyball on a basketball court between two teams. to score, the ball is passed from player to player across the court until it finally reaches the end zone. the team with the most points after three periods of fifteen minutes each wins. throughout the game, teams strategize and decide whether they want to gain an advantage by agreeing to take a sacrifice later in the game or if they should take the sacrifices early only for advantages later. if a team ends up with too many unpaid sacrifices, a debt, it is deducted from their final score. if the team ends up having taking more sacrifices than it has advantages, a surplus, the team gets additional points. the idea is that teams must work “together to figure out how to take advantage of the opportunities and advantages available to them – by borrowing or by saving. The game lets players experience the power and the pitfalls of debt, as well as the sacrifices and security of reserves. ”
