vanilla on a cone, with rainbow sprinkles
if you grew up in new york like i did, your childhood memories are filled of mr. softee. the mr. softee jingle, the man sticking his head out the truck window, the beautiful soft serve vanilla (or chocolate) with sprinkles. nothing was more beautiful.
soon, millions of chinese children (in china) will have those memories. serving 6 flavors instead of the regular 2 like they do in new york, there are now 5 mr. softee (or mr. soft heart as it’s called in china) trucks in the city of suzhou and one in taicang. not surprisingly, mr softee found its way to china through an american, who was working as an english teacher. his college rommate was from the family who founded mr. softee so when he had a hard time finding soft serve ice cream in china, he knew who to call.
most of the ingredients that go into mr. soft heart’s yummy goodness are purchased in china with the exception of milk. the milk is imported in from the united states, to ensure the ice cream stays “close and consistent as possible.” with the supply china setup, mr. softee is looking to continue it’s expansion in asia with japan, the philippines, singapore and thailand. as alex conway, the president of mr. softee china said “kids are the same all over the world. They see an ice cream truck, they come running.”

Were you in the area when all those news reports came out about how they never clean those ice cream machines and you’re basically eating a whole bunch of creamy bacteria? I have fond memories of mr.softee but you couldn’t pay me to eat it now. Lol
Nope…that is new to me…But I havent seen a Mr Softee in this area in decades… On occasion I do see Good Humor truck but that is rare too.

AH…Mr Softee…Yep, vanilla with rainbow sprinkles. I didnt grow up in NY, but neighboring CT. Mr Softee and the Good Humor were staple visitors to our apartment complex pool every day during summer vacation, but to the annoyance of our parents. HA!
Lasting memories.
