the supreme court may take up the issue of indecent language (four letter words beginning with s and f) and images (sex and other organs) being broadcast over the airwaves. as noted in the los angeles times article, federal law “forbids the broadcasting of ‘any obscene, indecent or profane language” and they’ve left it up to congress to determine what that means. using george carlin’s 1978 afternoon broadcast of seven dirty words as input, the court was able to determine what was “indecent” (he said the words repeatedly and talked a lot about organs used to do it and go number 1 or number 2. the 1978 definition all went to pot when janet jackson put her nip on display (for like 2 seconds) at the 2004 superbowl half-time show. you may also recall that the first love of my life bono (i still heart you sacred bird) said his award was “f*ing brilliant” at the 2003 golden globes awards ceremony.
the networks want clearer guidelines because such utterances and showings are becoming increasingly expensive (stations could pay up to $35M for violations) and because the wording is vague, for example, poop and crap are considered o.k. i just want to see the attorneys get up front and describe the conundrom with a straight face for example:
