instead of the buy-low/sell-high, internet advertising, or selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door, the get-rich quick schemes in tanzania involve the killing of albinos. the country’s witch doctors are said to be behind the killings–they use albino’s body parts to create potions that make people rich. unfortunately, this is no joke.
- as of this weekend, the 26th albino was killed and 134 witch doctors have been arrested
- family members often have to guard the dead bodies or bury the coffins in concrete to protect from grave robbers.
- a reporter working under cover for the bbc named vicky ntetema has gone into hiding because she fears for her life after she exposed this practice to the world. as part of her undercover research, ntetema met with 10 witch doctors, two of whom offered her a magic concoction mixed with ground albino organs (starting price of $2,000 for the vital organs). she also suggests that the popo were involved as the capture of criminals has been quite slow.
