must see tv: megyn kelly goes after guest

megyn kelly is a rising start at fox news so her recent heated discussion with guest kirsten powers from the new york post columnist was like a lesson on what anchors should not do. powers was on to discuss the reaction from a town hall where some were upset by the dept of justice’s inaction in the black panther voting intimidating scandal (black panther party members were said to have been intimidating voters on election day 2008, the dept of justice dropped the case).

for aspiring new anchors, here’s a list of what not to do:

don’t repeatedly tell your guest they don’t know what they are talking about
don’t yell and try to talk over them
don’t threaten to cut their mike
don’t call them out for having an agenda, of course they have an agenda
don’t tell them they should know their facts before the next time they come on the show again

i think it was lawyer megyn coming out, kinda makes me glad i don’t have to worry about seeing her on the other side of a court room.

another change to cnn’s ‘list’ing

the latest installment of the cnn saga has daytime anchor/mr. twitterman rick sanchez moving to primetime –he’s getting campbell brown’s vacated spot at 8 p.m. luckily it won’t be on for too long, it’ll be a filler until former governor and former frequenter of ladies of the night eliot spitzer starts his show there this fall. of the move, sanchez said “pretty soon we’re going to have two things going on. A: We’re going to be doing this newscast at 8:00 at night. We’re excited about that, and my book is going to be coming out.”

all i know is that 630 is going to be kinda unhappy about this.

rachel maddow will be reporting this week from afghanistan. in an interview with tvnewser she said of the trip “I do think there are questions that need to be asked and answered about the war that are going to benefit from me being there to be telling them. The McChrystal controversy has focused the nation’s attention on Afghanistan in a way that nothing else in the past year has been able to.” while over there, maddow will be meeting with our hero, richard engel, so i know i’ll be glued to the television tuesday and wednesday night for a glimpse of the desert iguana.

andy says it ain’t so

after some rumors started by “multiple insiders at cnn” (at least according to the wrap), anderson cooper emails his staff today to tell them that he has no plans to leave cnn. according to the rumors, andy is frustrated by his low ratings and is considering other offers when his contract ends next year. “one cnn on-air personality” also told the wrap that most cnn anchors were jealous of andy because he is utilizing all of cnn’s resources leaving them with very little for their own shows. i know andy is busy in new orleans covering the oil spill and that’s important news but he better do something about his ratings if he ever wants these rumors to stop. his secondary quarter ratings have gone down 28% from the same time last year.

hanging up his suspenders

larry king announced today that this fall, he will end his nightly program larry king live. in a statement to his audience he wrote “talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games.” while he’ll still do the occasional special, he said it was time to hang up the suspenders.

the show is the longest running program with the same host and time slot, according to the guinness book of world records. enjoy your retirement, larry.

so the trip to mogadishu was…r&r?

richard engel, our beloved desert iguana is now embedded with the 82nd airborne division in afghanistan and is once again delivering some amazing reporting (see video below). just a couple weeks before engel took a trip to mogadishu,somalia one of, if not the most dangerous place(s) on earth to see what life is like there in the place most famous for blackhawk down. he likened reporting there to ‘reporting on the moon’.

engel is one of my favorite reporters and i have this dream of meeting him and going out with him on a date someday but with all the work he’s done covering the wars in iraq and afghanistan and the general happenings in the middle east, i’m beginning to wonder if engel’s next trip should be to intensive therapy at an undisclosed location. another reporter the passionate michael ware had to quit his job at cnn a while back because the network would not give him time to deal with his ptsd. anyone who watched wares reporting on cnn could detect that something ‘wasn’t right’ with ware. the war clearly took a toll on him.

so richard, if you want our date to be perfect, please take a little time to ‘take care of you’.

that’s right, we’re going to have to stop calling people jacks of all trades and start calling them brians of all trades. newsman brian williams has thrilled us as a firefighter and entertained us as a comedian, now we can add dj to the list. over the weekend williams was a host on sirius xm satelite radio’s bruce springsteen e street radio channel. of the gig, the self-proclaimed ‘margaret mead of jersey shore music’ said “It was a very personal and intense experience to host this show, and I think that comes through on the air.” williams was a jersey boy and had the great opportunity to see springsteen in his early years at the famed stony pony in asbury park, nj. you can watch a segment of his spot below.

reporter ann curry screwed-up big time when she gave the commencement speech at wheaton college in massachusetts over the weekend. during her speech at the fomer women’s college curry recognized the schools esteemed graduates reverand billy graham, film director wes craven, and politician dennis hastert. problem was, these dudes graduated before 1988 when it was a women’s college and they attended another wheaton college — the one in illinois.

refreshingly, curry followed the path of her former today show colleague campbell brown who lost her contract at cnn last week and said “I am mortified by my mistake, and can only hope the purity of my motive, to find a way to connect with the graduates and to encourage them to a life of service, will allow you to forgive me.”

i bet brad and angelina will still keep her as their go-to interviewer.
