another busy holiday news weekend
while you were out doing your last minute shopping, stuffing your face with holiday fruit cake and trying to come up with some last minute lame excuse on why you couldn’t go visit family, the holiday news anchors (cause all the A-list folks were on vacation) were busy. here’s what you might’ve missed (in chronological order):
- the senate passed the health care bill in time for them to head home for the holidays. there’s still a long road ahead though as the house of representative and the senate must now work on reconciling the differences in the two bills (the house of rep has their own). one of the biggest differences is what has been referred to as the public option.
- obama is in hawaii for the holidays. frankly, i’m getting tired (and jealous) of watching cnn’s ed henry, the white house correspondent, filing in his reports from the beach.
- some radical nigerian dude tried to blow up a plane headed to detriot christmas day with a bomb made of powder and liquid. luckily something went wrong, some passengers and crew jumped him and he’s now got some nasty burns on his leg. because he was in the bathroom presumably assembling the bomb and then hid it with a blanket, international travelers are currently not allowed to leave their seats an hour before landing nor use pillows and blankets. and because everyone is super viligiant, there was another scare on the same flight a day later when another dude was in the bathroom a little too long and he didn’t like being asked about it.
- the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well as one of the passengers in the debacle plane blow-up incident made 18k on the photo he took of the bomber being restrained by officials. oh and since he was one of the passengers who helped to subdue the bomber, he’s decided that in addition to his 15 minutes of fame, he should be paid if he’s going to do any interviews.
- add domestic violence to the list of drugs and alcoholism for charlie sheen. he was arrested for going after his wife with a knife.
- amazon’s kindle is the most gifted item in amazon history (pretty impressive when you consider all the crap amazon sells) and kindle e-books outsold regular books on christmas day (not surprising since people probably unwrapped their gifts only to discover they gotta shell money out to use it).
- and new-ish today, a new round of deadly protests broke out in iran as opposition to the election results from june continue. so far ten are reported dead including the newphew of mousavi, the opposition leader.
