the trend of do-it-yourself continues, this time with drug overdose kits. the kit includes vials of naloxone, a drug that is used in hospitals to reverse overdoses. in cities like chicago, they are distributed to drug users at need exchange programs. in other areas, they are distributed to at risk populations. critics say that the kit only encourages more drug uses and that the drug should only be administered by medical professionals while advocates say the drug is safe. a study found that with training, addicts were able to recognize overdose symptoms and administer the medication effectively. there’s no clear data on how effective the distribution programs are but hopefully, it’s making some progress to lower the 22,000 deaths a year that result from drug overdose.
