five more trakrs to love

we here at sacred bird love dogs (and other animals too) so we found this story about the cloning of a rescue dog interesting. trakr was a german shepherd who was trained as search and rescue dog and is credited with locating the last survivor from the building rubble of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in nyc . trakr’s human owner, james symington, had the foresight to apply and win a essay contest with bioarts international which covered the cost of cloning trakr when the time came, which it did a few months ago . the cloning took place in south korea where trakr’s genes were placed into eggs from other dogs. after the eggs had grown into embryos, they were place in surrogate dog-mothers. the procedure resulted in five puppies, although the original intention was to only produce one. the last of the five puppies, each were carried by separate surrogates, was born april 4. said symington of his new puppies “Few dogs are born with exceptional abilities—Trakr was one of those dogs. And if these puppies have the same attributes as Trakr, I plan on putting them in to search and rescue so they can help people the way Trakr did.”
