the great closet of china
china is the news gift that keeps on giving. it’s gay pride week in china and beijing’s celebrants are being warned to celebrate behind closed doors, else, there will be consequences. according to the article, “here are thought to be around 35 million homosexuals in china, who face considerable discrimination in the workplace and elsewhere if they are courageous enough to come out. homosexuality was a crime here until 1997, and classed as a mental disorder until 2001. some government-funded medical institutes are still trying to find a “cure” for homosexuality.” it goes on to say that even though there are gay teahouses and clubs and websites starting to pop-up in china, being gay is considered to be quite queer. but they do love their sex-themed amusement parks.
