how did rob lowe do it?

the economic meltdown has everyone worried about the little cherub’s college fund and i know many are shaking in their shoes at the thought of paying college tuition.  here’s an idea:

last week, there was an article in the new york times talking about the growing appeal of foreign education for american college students.  schools like st. andrew’s university in scotland, uk, mcgill university in canada, and trinity college in ireland have started to receive a number of applicants and enrollments from the united states.  students are taking a look at these schools for a myriad of reasons among them, the cost savings, prestige, and the opportunity to experience life from a different perspective.

this week, i came across another article discussing the admissions questions asked of prospective students at oxford* and cambridge universities in the england, uk (harvard and yale are the oxford and cambridge of england). anyway if you go that route, seems like you’ll need to prepare your kids, because the admissions office is mixing it up a bit.  here is a sample of the questions asked:

mike nicholson, director of admissions at oxford said “what we’re trying to do is move students out of their comfort zone…many students will have a body of knowledge, and they may be expected to be trusted on that in the interview. what we want to do is take them beyond that point and get them to start thinking for themselves.” i don’t know about you, but i so wouldn’t be getting into college if applying today.

*oxford was made famous here stateside by rob lowe in the movie oxford blues.  i recognize that for this reference alone, i myself, should consider re-education overseas.
