i hope jillian & bob knew this
last night on the biggest loser, the contestants lost their kitchen privileges and were forced to order in or eat out. jillian and bob took the contestants out to a mexican restaurant one of the evening and provided tips on what to order but i wonder if they provided any tips on who they should break bread with. did they know about the new study that will appear in the journal of consumer research that says people trying to lose weight should be careful who they eat with?
the study found that we’re emotional people, no surprise, and that we adjust ourselves based on how we perceive those around us. if an overweight person is eating a large portion, we tend not to eat as much because we see his/her weight as a direct result of the overeating. makes sense right? but the study also found that if the overweight person eats lightly, we don’t necessarily follow suit. since the lighter portions clearly are not working for the overweight person, there’s no reason for us give up what we really want. another interesting finding was that if we eat with a thin person and that thin person decides to chow down on a mickey d’s big mac, fries and milkshake, we think that means we can eat the same fatty meal because if they can stay thin and eat all that food, that must mean we can too.
the best bet seems to be to eat alone, hunched over your kitchen sink.*
*that’s my own interpretation of the study results.
