i’ll have a round disc with cheese and tomato sauce…PRONTO!

remember way back when some dude proposed the change of french fries to freedom fries and they poured french wine down the drains? don’t be surprised if you are forced to begin ordering “round disc of dough with tomato sauce and cheese” or a large coffee at starbucks*. the italians are going the way of the french–an important influential cultural institute has asked italians to protect the language and reject “anglitaliano”–it simply has become too prominent in everyday italian life.

the institute surveyed italians for about four months to find “inappropriate examples of foreign words being used in everyday Italian, either written or spoken”. here are the words that were deemed most annoying: weekend, ok, welfare, briefing, mission, location, bookshop, devolution, computer, know-how, privacy, and shopping. like the brits, the italians found the words used in business to be really annoying.
