it’s just potatoes, right?
demetri medvedev (president of russia) is calling for the russian people to ease up on the booze. the president called russia’s booziness a “national calamity”. here’s why:
- 38% of russians between 20 and 39 suffer are alcoholics, and 55% percent of those 40 to 59 are
- 30,000 people die each year from alcohol poisening
- russians have just about doubled their alcohol intake every decade since the 1970s.
to curb the consumption, he expects to implement a new system of taxes and price increases to make the stuff less appealing. when gorbachev did this, his popularity plumeted and peeps started bootlegging vodka. one guy interviewed for the story was even nostalgic for the olden days, he said “i remember the moonshine during the gorbachev days…the best i’ve ever had.”
maybe medvedev can ask george w. bush how he kicked the habit.
