it’s not 90210
as tom parker, the usa policy director of amnesty international, said “The only thing that President Obama is doing with this announcement is changing the zip code of Guantánamo.” parker, of course, is talking about obama’s plan to move the the prisoners currently housed in guantanamo bay. the feds are in the process of buying thomson correctional center in illinois (zip code 61285), which will go through extensive security upgrades to house a large portion of the 210 prisoners currently residing in gitmo. in addition to the area leased to the dept of defense for the gitmo prisoners, the prison will also serve as a high security federal prison. the gitmo prisoners will not be allowed to interact with the other prisoners.
despite the additional 3,000 jobs it will bring, the locals in illinois who are obviously not so happy to have a high security prison built in their backyard despite obama’s assurance that this poses them no danger. other opponents include human rights groups who, like amnesty international, who doesn’t feel the plan addresses the fact that the gitmo prisoners have not been charged with a crime.
