pass the duchy*
if part of your errands this weekend include a trip to bj’s or costco, you may want to rethink that. in a blogpost called worst warehouse club buys, walletpop, identifies the worst ways to spend money at these discount giants. here they are:
- gas - warehouse clubs are among the first to reflect the increase in gas prices since the volume of gas they sell requires them to fill their tanks more often than other gas stations.
- fruits and veggies – you’ll get a better deal at your local supermarket if there’s a sale and since you have to buy it in bulk, there’s a good chance what you buy at a warehouse store will go bad before you can eat it.
- paper goods -use coupons for things like tp and paper towels at your local store and you’ll save more.
- bling - the value of the item you buy and the cut and quality are suspect. take a road trip to your city’s diamond district instead.
- gray market products – this is stuff that was meant for sale in other countries but made their way here cause of the deep discount. things like warranties aren’t likely to be honored.
- products that have coupons – most warehouses don’t take them.
- fashion - those calvin klein undies are of lesser quality than the ones you’ll find at say, tj maxx. many designers make warehouse grade product specifically for these stores.
- credit cards - the interest rates are usually high.
- bulk items – big isn’t always better or cheaper. the volume you buy may be more costly. plus, how’re you gonna store it?
this long list makes me think that you should just steer clear and be a better scout for deals in your local stores. sounds like you should pass the duchy on the left and right hand side.
* a territory, fief, or domain ruled by a duke or duchess (in this case, the duke and duchess of discounting).
