this is the question asked of the millions of californians, gay and straight are asking because gay peeps across the state plan to “call in gay” to protest the ban on gay marriage passed in november. this wednesday, gays will “stay home from work, school and do no shopping, to prove how crucial they are to american society.” the idea, first hatched by writer joel stein of the los angeles times who suggested that gays model a protest similar to the 2006 boycott organized by latino immigrants protesting proposed immigration policy, has turned into a grass roots effort with some serious legs as evidenced by the groups website and activity on facebook both of which receive thousands of hits.
