sometimes it doesn’t pay
tax day is almost here again. as you’re running around gathering all your paperwork afraid of how much you might owe uncle sam, check out these statistics from the tax policy center and deloitte tax based on 2009 data:
- 47% of americans paid no federal income taxes although they might’ve paid other taxes such as social security and medicare. most also did pay some state income and property taxes
- a family of four making $50k with 2 children under the age of 17 paid no federal tax
- 10% of earners paid 73% of the federal income taxes
- 40% of the bottom earners got more tax credits than they owe. uncle sam paid them!
with tax breaks to the wealthy and tax breaks to the poor, it sure sucks to be part of the middle class.
