put down the ‘golden slipper’

when i was growing up, my mom left the spanking chore to my dad–we got a whack with the golden slipper this gold lame’ shoe she often wore with a faux pucci dress she’d wear to dinner parties.when i did something bad i’d lie face down on my bed waiting for my dad to make his way up the stairs to deal the blows to my ass (by blows i mean one quick whack that would sting a bit). the events, i think, only left a memory and it’s probably because the golden slipper was reserved for the worst of offenses.

this is a  a good thing because research from tulane university says that kids “who were spanked more frequently at age 3 were more likely to be aggressive by age 5…the odds of a child being more aggressive at age 5 if he had been spanked more than twice in the month before the study began increased by 50%”. this interesting research adds to what researchers reported a while back that kids that were spanked often score lower on iq tests.

spanking may serve as a quick way to shut your kid up, but parents that spank kids are modeling the behavior that aggressive behavior is a way to solve problems.  instead of spanking parents should use the old time out strategy “that typically involves denying the child any attention, praise or interaction with parents for a specified period of time (that is, the parents ignore the child). These quiet times force children to calm down and learn to think about their emotions, rather than acting out on them blindly.”

so remember mom’s and dad’s reading this story, ignore your kid, don’t hit him.

This story was big news and I don’t get why. Of course kids who
get spanked are going to be more aggressive. Duh
