the free ride is just about over
starting 2011, the nytimes website will start charging for unlimited access. they’ll be using a “metered approach” which means you can access a set number of articles per month and if you exceed that number, you’ll have to pay for it. this follows suit with news corp’s newspaper sites which rupert murdoch has said would start charging for access next summer.
the nytimes has toyed with paid content before only to move back to the free model. the most successful paid model has been with wall street journal at wsj.com which offers free content and charges for access to premium content*.
just so you know, sb will always be free.
* if you didn’t already know, you can get around the wjs.com paywall with google. copy and paste the headline into google and follow the google link will allow you to read the article for free.
