the w. stands for "willkommen"…

that’s his opening line at all international events, cause we know how he rolls. today, george w. bush, in the presence of greatness, gave his final speech at the general assembly. w. spoke about many things–his confidence in the economy, his confidence that n. korea, myanmar, and iran are empires full of evil, and confidence in the willing and wonderful coalition he pulled together. i’m not sure it did much to quell the worries of most americans though.

a public opinion survey released yesterday by the chicago council on global affairs, a nonpartisan organization committed to “discourse on global issues through contributions to opinion and policy formation, leadership dialogue, and public learning” confirmed that americans are worried about their standing in the world. here are some highlights from the opinion poll that surveyed folks of many politcal persuasians:

  • improving america’s standing in the world is rated as as very important (83%)–this ranked higher than “protecting the jobs of American workers” (80%).
  • the ability of the u.s. to achieve its foreign policy goals has decreased (53%), 10 % think it has increased, 36% say it has stayed the same.
  • the u.s. should be ready to talk to Cuba (70%), North Korea (68%) and Iran (65%).
  • the u.s. withdrawal from Iraq within two years (67%).
