twitter at it again
twitter’s been busy over the weekend. not just the usual i’m-enjoying-a-nice-weekend-day kind of messages but with messages about the fallout of the controversial election outcomes in iran and how cnn has been covering it. as a matter of fact, #cnnfail (a hashtag used to identify topics in twitter) was a trending topic throughout saturday and part of Sunday on twitter. twitter-ers were critical of cnn for what they consider a failure in providing adequate coverage on the developing story. one twitter posted “Dear CNN, Please Check Twitter for News About Iran.” someone even created a website to collect the twitter updates.
what is interesting is that according to the tvnewser blog there were actually more mentions of iran on cnn (172 over the weekend) than fox news (100) or msnbc (57). so are cnn viewers just more critical or do msnbc or fox news viewers not care about the elections in iran? what is becoming clearer is that although twitter may never replace mainstream news sources, it is already a major news source for many and it’s become a way to influence what the mainstream news sources are covering.
