we’ll have ‘nun’ of that, sister
word came at the end of last week that the vatican is investigating american nuns. the official word from the vatican is that they are examining in depth, the quality of life for nuns (the ranks today number 60,000 down from 180,000 in 1965) but word on the street in the convent is that they have become a little too modern and a little too ‘cas’. the investigation, ordered by cardinal france rodé, head of the vatican office that deals with religious orders and carried out by mother mary clare millea the superior general the apostles of the sacred heart of jesus will take a look at each order of nuns in the us and will examine how “well they are “living in fidelity” both to their congregation’s own internal norms and constitution, and to the church’s guidelines for religious life.”"
according to the article, since vatican ii “many american nuns stopped wearing religious habits, left convents to live independently and went into new lines of work: academia and other professions, social and political advocacy and grass-roots organizations that serve the poor or promote spirituality.” as you can guess, some nuns are for the examination and some are against it. the fors believe that this will give some much needed attention to an often neglected or under-recognized group of women. the againsts thinks that the information gathered will be used to bring the nuns into a less modern line.
i wonder if, after visiting the more rogue orders, if sister mary starts whistling this tune:
