what’re your plans for the week?
the usual? i bet the plans don’t include joining in a marathon reading of the first seven books of the old testament (genesis to the apocolypse or um, the beginning to the end). well peeps that’s what’s going on in rome, italy (vatican city to be more exact). pope benedict xvi invited an multi-faith group of world citizens to join in the marathon reading in an effort to make the bible more accessible. the 6 day, 7 night event kicked off by the pope himself includes almost 1,300 readers. readers like an orthodox clergymen; an algerian female writer, the israeli ambassador to the vatican, and an auschwitz concentration camp survivor will help the vatican’s efforts to bring the word of god to everyone because “the bible belongs to everyone without any discrimination or cultural or ideological barrier.”
before any of you get all indignant–think of the bible as a historical text (which it is) and of the event as a very interesting art installation. also, remember that in your youth, many of you stood outside for and attended multiple days of dead shows. so hit the road and catch the tail end of the reading. alitalia could use the business anyway.
