dem convention: day 3, clinton (bill) and biden’s acceptance
day 3 brought the official nomination of barack obama as the party’s candiate for president. after some concern earlier in the week that hillary clinton’s delegates would not vote for obama during the official and public roll call vote which would put into jeopardy the party unity message they’re working so hard to convey, clinton put forth a motion to cut the roll call short and called for an unanimous vote for obama.
bill clinton’s speech
clinton was reportedly only allotted 10 minutes but not surprisingly, his speech runs more than 20 minutes. it’s not really his fault though, the crowds wouldn’t stop cheering, going on for more than 3 minutes at one point. there were some rumbling last week that clinton was upset because he was asked to speak about foreign policy (which was the theme of the night if you didn’t get that) but in the end, obama told him he can speak about whatever he wanted.
- on hillary’s loss – “In the end, my candidate didn’t win. But I’m very proud of the campaign she ran: She never quit on the people she stood up for, on the changes she pushed for, on the future she wants for all our children.”
- reaffirming both hillary’s and his support – “Hillary told us in no uncertain terms that she’ll do everything she can to elect Barack Obama. That makes two of us.”
- repeat endorsement – “Everything I learned in my eight years as president and in the work I’ve done since, in America and across the globe, has convinced me that Barack Obama is the man for this job”.
- not sure obama’s folks liked how he reminded everyone of obama’s inexperience – “With Joe Biden’s experience and wisdom, supporting Barack Obama’s proven understanding, insight, and good instincts, America will have the national security leadership we need. “
- obama is ready – “Barack Obama is ready to lead America and restore American leadership in the world. Ready to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States.”
- in true clinton fashion, he always circles it back to himself – “Together, we prevailed in a campaign in which the Republicans said I was too young and too inexperienced to be commander in chief. Sound familiar? It didn’t work in 1992, because we were on the right side of history.”
biden’s acceptance speech
there were tears in the crowd at the start of the speech when biden talked about losing his first wife and raising his two sons alone. he may think he’s a man of few words but his speech was more than 20 minutes.
- acceptance of nomination - “Since I’ve never been called a man of few words, let me say this as simply as I can: Yes. Yes, I accept your nomination to run and serve alongside our next president of the United States of America, Barack Obama.”
- although he says he’s friends with mccain, he compares mccain to bush – “that’s not change; that’s more of the same.”
- continued attacks on mccain –”On the most important national security issues of our time, John McCain was wrong, and Barack Obama has been proven right” . “John McCain was wrong. Barack Obama was right” was repeated more than three times.
- what he learned from his mother – “When I got knocked down by guys bigger than me, she sent me back out and demanded that I bloody their nose so I could walk down that street the next day.”
