pulitzer for the national enquirer?
can you image if the national enquirer won the pulitzer prize? barr levine, the executive editor of the national enquirer, thinks they deserve one for the paper’s coverage of the john edwards scandal*. now that edwards has finally admitted he is indeed the father of rielle hunter’s baby, the enquirer thinks they deserve the credit for being the first news organization (and I use the term news organization loosely here) to break the news of the affair and paternity of the baby. in 2007, the enquirer was the first to publish that edwards was having an affair with hunter. interestingly enough, no other news org went near that story and it quickly died. when the enquirer later published another article with a photo of edwards holding a baby claiming it was his baby with hunter, still no one touched it.
so maybe the enquirer does deserve a pulitzer for their investigative skills. next time you might want to look twice at the supermarket tabloid story about little green men.
*if you’re interested in more of the gritty details of the affair and some interesting revelations about elizabeth edwards, read the excerpt from the book “game change” that was published in nymag a couple of weeks ago.
