rnc day 2: i always thought for politicians it was "me first"
the republicans got back-on-track yesterday after an abbreviated schedule on monday due to hurricane gustav. the purpose of the night was introducing mccain/palin ticket and platform to the country — the big idea of the night was “country first” (unlike the baby killing, money spending liberals). the big speakers of the night were george w. bush, fred thompson, and joe lieberman. highlights and links to transcript and video are below.
george w. bush: “i berlieve texas, god, and mccain/palin”
“in the time the oval office has been in my trust, i’ve kept near my desk reminders of america’s character, including a painting of a west texas mountain, lit by the morning sun. it reminds me that americans have always lived on the sunrise side of the mountain. we are a nation that looks to the new day with confidence and optimism. and i’m optimistic about our future, because i believe in the goodness and wisdom of the american people. i am optimistic because i have faith in freedom’s power to lift up all of god’s children and lead this world to a future of peace. and i’m optimistic about something else. when the debates have ended and all the ads have run and it is time to vote, americans will look closely at the judgment, the experience and the policies of the candidates and they will cast their ballots for the mcCain-palin ticket.

fred thompson: “kicking liberal ass is not above my pay grade…i’d do it for actor’s equity rates”
“the democrats present a history- making nominee for president — history-making in that he’s the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president. apparently — apparently they believe that he would match up well with the history-making, democrat-controlled Congress — history-making because it’s the least accomplished and most unpopular congress in our nation’s history. together, they would take on these urgent challenges with protectionism, higher taxes and an even bigger bureaucracy and a supreme court that could be lost to liberalism for a generation…we need a leader who stands on principle. we need a — a president and vice president who will take the federal bureaucracy by the scruff of the neck and give it a good shakin’. and my friends, we need a president who doesn’t think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade.”

joe lieberman: “if he loses, i’m changing my name to liebermud ’cause after this, i’m screwed on the hill”
“i can tell you with a certain faith that as president you can count on john mccain to be what he is naturally, a restless reformer who will clean up washington and get our government working again for all of the american people. tonight, i want to ask you, whether you are an independent, a reagan democrat, a clinton democrat, or just a plain-old democrat, this year, when you vote for president, vote for the person you believe is best for our country, not for the party you happen to belong to. i ask those of you who are watching or listening, vote for the leader who, since the age of 17, when he first raised his hand and took an oath to defend and protect our constitution, has always put america first.”
