there was considerable uproar in hollywood this week after the academy of motion picture arts and sciences failed to honor farrah fawcett during the oscar broadcast on sunday. according to the academy’s executive director, bruce davis, there were too many good people that died and, farrah was better known for her tv work than her film work. of the ommission he said “an unusual number of extremely distinguished screenwriters [died in '09]…In every category, you’re going to miss some wonderful people.”

for many that argument didn’t hold water–given that michael jackson’s mug made it in the montage. even fawcett’s formerly estranged ’step daughter’ tatem o’neil weighed in and said “we are deeply saddened that a truly beautiful and talented actress Farrah Fawcett was not included in the memorial montage during the 82ND ACADEMY AWARDS. We are bereft with this exclusion of such an international icon who inspired so many for so many reasons. Beautiful, talented Farrah will never be forgotten by her family and amazing fans.”

george clooney is well known for his work on facts of life and er, does that mean when he goes he’ll have to wait for the emmys?

a couple in south korea was arrested for child neglect–their daughter died of malnutrition. here’s the depressing part–the parents neglected their real-life child in order to raise a virtual child on the interwebs. the article said the couple “were hooked on an online game called “Prius,” where they were raising a virtual daughter…They admitted to feeding their child rotten powdered milk, frequently spanking her, and leaving her at home during marathon sessions at the “PC bang” gaming clubs that are a staple of Korean gamer culture.” even more sad, this isn’t the only death attributed to an obsession with gaming in korea–some dude died in 2005 after a 50 hour marathon session. it’s such a problem that the country is considering legislation to curb excessive gaming.

last week was a little busy in the media world. there were lots of changes at cnn, the ladies of fox news donned their short skirts for a visit and jon klein proves that he has yet to learn that if you’re going to talk trash, you better have something to back it up with.

anderson cooper may or may not be in talks to replace katie couric when her contract expires in a year
christiane amanpour is rumored to be in the running to replace george stephanopoulos for this week
cnn’s new 7pm program will debut 3/22. it’s name, john king, usa, was announced via twitter
entertainment program, the insider, visits the ladies of fox news
and my favorite quote of the week came from fox news in an interview with cnn/us president, jon klein. says klein when comparing cnn to fox “we cover the news, they are about fomenting outrage.” fox news’ response: “we don’t respond to presidents of fifth-place news networks. The last time we looked, Jon was losing to the Weather Channel, so call us back when he and CNN regain relevancy.”

when they caught him. the pr guy for al-quaeda, adam gadahn was arrested over the weekend. wanted for a number of crimes. he was nabbed in karachi, pakistan as part of the big push to catch al-quaeda operatives–there was a $1M bounty on his head. gadahn moved to pakistan in 1998, took part in a training camp and moved up the ranks to become the pr guy in the last few years. he’s the first american in 50 years to be indicted for treason and was most recently indicted for his involvement in the november fort hood shootings that killed 15 people. in a recent video gadahn said “As the blessed operations of September 11th showed, a little imagination and planning and a limited budget can turn almost anything into a deadly, effective and convenient weapon.”

let’s hope the fool doesn’t get sent to one of those art classes.

march, hurry up and go out like a lamb already. please. it was a weird week here in the land of the sacred bird. lots of interesting stories that revealed a little something about the culture in which we live. here is the summary of the week that was here at sacred bird the week ending march 5, 2010.

another boring interview (this time in video format) with fox morning news anchor bill hemmer. i’m thinking this dude needs to go on another around the world trip because he hasn’t told a new story about his life in 20 years.
miss america got dumped.
some kids overseas took a bite of an apple. it wasn’t candied.
speaking of fruit, no one wanted the juice.
we eat well, but don’t say so.

check out chatroulette. as of february, the site had more than 10,000 members who signed up to be randomly connected to strangers around the world for web “chats”. i’ve haven’t been on it but it appears to be the new platform where you can find some of our favorite news anchors – diane sawyer, keith olberman, katie couric and brian williams.

many were outraged by the new jay leno ad campaign announcing his return to ‘the tonight show‘ because it used the song “back where you belong”. a (non) reader sent a link to the tags on hulu (where we used to be able to watch jon stewart clips). the tags are used to index jay leno content and they aren’t kind. a few of the choice words include awful, banality of evil, oprah’s biatch, and mustnotseetv. here’s a view of page 1 (there are six).

three guys went to court over a suit and for the greater good for all, they all agreed to donate the suit. the guys: oj simpson, fred goldman (ron goldman’s father) and mike gilbert (simpson’s former agent). the suit: the suit oj wore when he was acquitted from the criminal case accusing him of murdering nicole simpson and ron goldman. the museum: the smithonsian. fortunately, the smithonsion turned them down saying it was not appropriate for their collection. good to know that someone involved in this story has some sense.

i’m surprised it didn’t make the list of the top 10 mispronounced foodie words (maybe chipotle isn’t foodie-enough). it’s pronounced ‘chi-po-t-lay’ not ‘chip-ol-tee’. just like realtor is pronounced ‘real-tour’ not ‘real-a-tor’. anyway, here’s the list via the chicago tribune.

apple admitted that the company that can usually do no wrong had hired underage workers at three plants outside of the u.s. where iphones and computers are made. the report said “Across the three facilities, our auditors found records of 11 workers who had been hired prior to reaching the legal age, although the workers were no longer underage or no longer in active employment at the time of our audit.” legal working age in the countries is 16.

in addition to the age problem, the report noted that the company overworks and underpays their employees, “two dozen facilities that were paying their people less than the minimum required wage and another 57 that were cheating workers out of legally required benefits — things like sick time and maternity leave. Some factories even cut workers’ wages for “disciplinary purposes.”

maybe that’s why it’s hard to type on the keyboard. it’s made by people with little hands.
