changing of the guard

worldnewsabc news announced the retirement of charles gibson from world news today. said gibson “The program is now operating at a very accelerated, but steady, cruising speed, and I think it is an opportune time for a transition — both for the broadcast and for me.”

diane sawyer will be taking over for gibson starting in january. for the first time, two of the three major network evening news programs will be anchored by women (katie couric was the first). this would great if the viewership numbers weren’t going downhill. check out the numbers of the combined three programs (world news, cbs evening news with katie couric and nbc nightly news with brian williams) for the last four years.

is that a fist pump? like obama style?

I’m all for being green, but it seems that networks are merely recycling news personalities from show to show. Surely there are some competent new faces?

i think someone like richard engel would be awesome anchoring the news but a) he’s too newsy (he actually cares about reporting; b) he couldn’t take being chained to a desk; and c) he wouldn’t have the stomach to report things like the michael jackston story with a straight face. the anchor desk is a cushy job of debate moderation and looking/sounding good.
