"great journalism"

with the vp announcements just hours and days away and the convention just a few days away, both cnn and fox news have or will be airing specials on the two presidental candiates. i’m traveling so don’t have access to fox news but i found the below one minute compilation of the fox news special bill hemmer hosted on obama. based on my conversation with 180 the other day, it seems the clip is a pretty good representation of the one hour special. in an interview with hemmer in the austin american-statesman, hemmer explains that while fox strives for “great journalism”, they also recognize the need for “customers in the store”. mission accomplished, the special was the highest rated documentary so far this year. according to hemmer, his job “during the day is straight-up news”. i guess because this special was on in the evenings, that didn’t apply. did you see it? what did you think?

Both the Obama and McCain documentaries where hard hitting, yet fair. Eric Shawn did a fabulous job with bring to the forefront the Keating-5 situation McCain involved with, never mind his well known temper.

Anyone with any sense of fairness should watch both documentaries to draw a semblance of an imformed opinion.

i responded somewhere (i think tvnewser) that the obama documentary was very “predictable”. I was surprised that hemmer focused so much on his friends, past associations, etc. (the muslim angle was very prominent). what about economic policy? what about his position on the legislative and judiciary branches? I am embarrassed to admit that i was working on a sacred bird story and i missed the mccain documentary–hope to pick it up this weekend or something.

in what i’m assuming are both cases, i wonder what substantive information i would use from the documentaries to influence my vote.

180…These documentaries were never intended to be about their policies and idiologies…They were always intended to be about their pasts, their growing up and formative years…How their life experiences have shaped them into the men that they are.

That is why they were called “Obama (McCain): Character and Conduct”

Its unfortunate that you didnt realize when tuning in.

even so, it’s interesting how much hemmer and his editorial staff decided to focus on the areas that would be of “dis-interest” for the viewership.

did you notice that?

I found that Shawn spent as much time on McCain the the Keating-5 as Hemmer spent on Tony R….So I guess I found neither candidate was given any special treatment….They did focus on the perceived problematic backgrounds of each candidate

I didnt really expect fluff pieces….JMO

i had a typo in the earlier. as i was embarrassed to admit, i missed mccain. glad to see that both candidates were hit with the same un-fluffy hammer. thanks for keeping up with sb. we love comments and ideas!
