journalists go on trial in north korea
lisa ling has been on the press trail this week to talk about her sister, laura ling, and euna lee’s trial in north korea which is scheduled to start tomorrow. both were working on a story for al gore’s current tv about trafficked women along the north korean border when they were detained in march for crossing the border into north korea. for the past couple of months, ling and lee’s family has only received a couple of letters and one or two phone calls. a swedish diplomat is the only one who has had any access to the women.
it’s speculated that kim jong-il will have a lot of influence on the outcome of the trial (he is, afterall, a dictator). with the april’s unsuccessful (or successful depending on who you ask) satellite launch and upcoming planned long range missle launches, there might be a lot of politics going on here and not so much fair trials. i’m guessing it’s unlikely that jong-il will follow ahmadinejad’s lead when he intervened and got journalist roxana saberi released. let’s hope that instead of getting sent to the labor camps, these women will be sent home soon.
