maybe they were just tired
last week when president obama talked about repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, he got a standing ovation from just about everyone but the joint chiefs of staff. today, defense secretary robert gates testified in front of the senate armed services committee that he has a “high-level working group” in place to work on an implementation plan which will be completed by the end of the year. the plan is suppose to address how the change would affect policies such as housing, benefits, misconduct and its potential effect on recruiting and retention.
those who object say it’s a bad time with the country being in two wars even though studies of other nato countries who have made a change in their policy saw no impact. others, like senator john mccain, say “Has this policy been ideal? No, it has not. But it has been effective.” the ultimate decision to repeal or not repeal will sit with congress so let’s hope mccain’s thinking is in minority.
i say it’s about time the military stop pussyfooting around. i mean really, they’re getting a wiccan prayer circle at the colorado air force academy why can’t they figure out a way to let people serve in the military and be open about their sexual orientation?
