dem convention: day 1 highlights
in case you missed it, here are the highlights from the two main speeches from the first day of the democratic convention in denver.
unconfirmed until the last minute, senator edward kennedy looked surprisingly well. his speech had the room in tears. some highlights:
- on his health – “I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate when we begin the great test.”
- his comparsion of obama to jfk – “We are told that Barack Obama believes too much in an America of high principle and bold endeavor, but when John Kennedy called of going to the moon, he didn’t say it’s too far to get there.”
- on obama – “Barack Obama will close the book on the old politics of race and gender and group against group and straight against gay.”

some highlights from michelle obama’s “humanizing” keynote
- the family’s guiding values – “work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.”
- her love of country and the core “belief at the heart of” obama’s work – ” All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do — that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be.”
- how obama will get the job done – “by bringing us together and reminding us how much we share and how alike we really are.”
