i’m not that fat/old/ugly/liberal/conservative– really, i’m not

on any given day in new york, you walk downtown and you are bombarded by tall, skinny, pretty models. you know that no amount of working out, beauty treatments, or psycho therapy will make you “one of them”. that’s why i think the dove commercials showing “real women” and their imperfections were so welcomed and appreciated by us mere mortals. you could look at the billboard and think “she looks great and she’s bigger than me, finally a real woman.” well, thanks to one of our loyal readers in chicago who turned us on to this story, we were wrong. just like everything else, the women of the dove ads are kinda real. in an article in the new yorker, master retoucher pascal dangin talked about the challenge he faced when retouching the ads for the campaign. according to dangin the project “was great to do, a challenge, to keep everyone’s skin and faces showing the mileage but not looking unattractive.” in other words, the women should look real, but not that real.

it sort of reminded me of the political campaigns. we want our politicians to be real … kinda.

  • we want barack obama to loosen up and mingle with the every day man, then we see him suck majorly bowling. look real, but not that real.
  • we want hilary clinton to look like she can hang with the boys, then we see her doing shots with a groups of guys looking like a cougar on the prowl. look real, but not that real.
  • we want john mccain to hang with the blue collar workers, then we see him bringing pizza to a firestation looking like a grandpa bringing snacks to the kids party. look real, but not that real.
