all i got was a stinkin’ t-shirt
here are some facts about the prize that you can use to impress your friends at happy hour tonight:
- last will and testament: on november 27, 1895, alfred nobel signed his last will and testament. he left the lion’s share of his moolah to the nobel prizes. the peace prize would be given to a “person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”
- no winner: sometimes no peace prizes are awarded–for example, none were awarded during world war i and world war ii.
- nominees: this year, 205 organizations and people were submitted for the award.
- 5 time loser: gandhi was nominated 5 times and never won.
- prize package: the winner gets $1.4M bones, a lavish banquet with swedish royalty, and a gold medal (this one isn’t chocolate)
i was almost as suprised as the president to learn that he’d won the nobel prize for peace for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” of course there’s controversy about whether or not he deserves it–with a war escalating in afghanistan and the little sign of things toning down in iraq and with iran still in disarray and at home, certain groups don’t have equal rights–i’m in the premature camp.
