peace = out

the south african government announced that it was cancelling a peace conference to be held there after denying the dalai lama a visa for entry to attend the conference–he wouldn’t be aloud to deplane if he took the journey.  government officials said that the dalai lama “would have distracted attention from south africa and drawn it instead to the contentious debate over the status of tibet.”

other would-be attendees (and nobel peace prize winners) retired anglican archbishop desmond tutu and former president f.w. de klerk basically called the government chickens for caving in to the chinese who said they wouldn’t attend if the dalai lama were to attend.  china’s prime minister wen jiabao recently said that other countries should mind their own business when it comes to tibet.

the dalai lama only had one thing to say to the government, it was “this is war.” nelson mandella said that the president should “watch his back“.*

* totally kidding, of course.
