the more things change, the more they stay the same

as we get ready for the first of the presidential debates this friday night, i thought it would be interesting to look back at some past debate moments. a while back, a friend of mine, a newspaper collector, said that if you look at, say, the new york times from 1970, the issues/topics of interest are the same as today (war, healthcare, spending, government). looking at the clips below, he’s totally right.

reagan/carter 1980
the famous “are you better off” speech.

clinton/perot/bush 1992
i’m sorry but i still think h.w. is sympathetic. he’s clearly out of touch, but now i have an understanding of how that, coupled with w. could be unnerving.

bush/kerry 2004
w.’s comments here sound ike the beginning of the “it’s hard word” mantra. kerry looks much better in the rear view mirror.
