this is way better than poland!
an article a few weeks ago in the new york times gave us insight into the interrogation process and to the secret locales where the united states and its allies debrief information rich subjects like 9/11 architect khalid shaikh mohammed. as we know, this site is one of many places around the world where these types are brought to sometimes literally spill their guts. that same article discussed the idea that violent (read tortoruous) interrogation may not be necessary or effecive in getting the info required (the you get more bees with honey theory).
seems like the saudis got an advanced copy of the article because they are creating very nice surroundings for their religiously confused countrymen. a place where they can “rethink” how they think about religion, jihad, and martyrdom. they call it a care center where “prisoners enjoy access to wide-ranging recreational facilities including their own swimming pools, video games and table tennis…in return for the more relaxed environment, prisoners have to attend religious education classes where islamic scholars challenge their views.” according to the article–and the prisoners (or is it guests?)–it’s working.
- take ahmed shayea for example. in 2003, ahmed, acting on behalf of god, ran a massive truck bomb into the jordanian embassy in baghdad and killed 60 people–a job designed to announce the arrival of al-quaeda in iraq. ahmed survived the bombing and was handed over to the saudis. his stay at the care center really had him rethink his ways and he now proclaims that he is “now an enemy of al-qaeda” and believes that god saved him to deliver the message.
- or juma muhammed dossari, a former long-stay guest of the guantanamo bay–he was there for six years. dossari finished up his time away from home by spending a few months at the saudi care center before returning home (unleashed on society). according to dossari, the care center “prepared me to go back into society gradually…everything changed. saudi arabia changed. the whole world changed.”
it’s after reading a story like this, i am reminded of a favorite quote made by jim belushi’s character in the 90s classic about last night “pull this leg, it plays jingle bells”.

UPDATE: not sure the detention center is working. dude released to the saudhi’s in 07, and who was a guest at the rehab center, is now the deputy chief of terror at al qaeda’s yemen branch.

i gotta ask the question – are “militant Islamist” really interested in video games and pepsi??
