those pesky witches

1415837446_674650d2b4you can kinda guess that there’s going to be trouble when the leader of a country insist on being called “his excellency president”. for instance, the citizens of the small west african nation of the republic of gambia get the pleasure of seeing his excellency president professor dr. al-haji yahya jammeh’s face everyday as his portrait is posted along roadsides. more dangerous seems to his excellency president’s interest in dabbling in medicine. his prescription for aids, a herbal potion to be taken with bananas, was given out for free in his country. his new concoction is a liquid that you either bath or drink to ward off witches. unfortunately, this time his excellency president is taking a more direct approach to solving the problem. it has been reported that possibly hundreds of gambians have been taken from their homes to secret locations where they are forced bath or drink the liquid which at minimum gives them hallucinations and at worst kills them. according to a fisherman who was taken, he was told the purpose was because “There are witches in the country who are hurting people, and killing people.” another says that once you drink the “filthy” water, “you become unconscious and can’t think”. i guess burning at the stake was too messy.
