what would beaker say?
everyday a new study is released to tell us something new or confirm something we’ve already suspected. i know there’s a whole science behind how to setup an experiment to ensure that your data is valid but i often question whether a study with less than 100 participants is really telling of millions. here are a few i read about just this week:
- swearing makes you feel less pain – 64 volunteers were able to keep their hand in ice water longer when they repeatedly muttered a curse word compared to when they didn’t. the researchers suggest the reason being that swearing increases aggression, making the volunteers less likely to show signs of weakness.
- cats know how to control humans – this should come as no surprise to pet owners. cats make a high pitched meow that annoy their human owners when they want their way. researchers recorded the sounds 10 cats made throughout the day, both when it’s seeking food and when it’s not. when played back for 50 humans participants, even the non-pet owners were able to identify when the cats were hungry.
- positive thinking only makes you more miserable – 68 low self esteem students were asked to participate in a 4 minute exercise where every 15 seconds they were suppose to tell themselves “I am a lovable person.” after those 4 minutes, those that typically don’t respond to positive feedback and tend to read self help books were felt more negative than those who did not repeat the affirmation.
