bees cut off at the knees

scientists say that the bee population is continuing to decline for the third year in a row. bee colonies are suffering from collapse disorder as evidenced by the 29 percent drop in 2009,  a 36 percent drop in 2008 and a 32 percent drop in 2007. scientists speculate but can’t find a specific reason for the drop–the long and horrid winter along with a lot of use of pesticides in growing may are the prime suspects. david mendes, president of the american beekeeping federation said about the winter: “There are a lot of beekeepers who are in trouble…Under normal condition you have 10 percent winter losses.. this year there are 30, 40 to 50 percent losses.” and a study published in the public library of science journal found “121 different pesticides in 887 samples of bees, wax, pollen and other elements of hives, lending credence to the notion of pesticides as a key problem.”

as you know, bees are a critical part of the ecosystem and the pollination process is needed for agriculture development. my guess is that there will be a lot of buzz about this story.
